Volleyball Recap

The Chapman Irish volleyball team continued their excellent season last week, placing second in their tournament at Silver Lake and sweeping NCKL opponent Concordia on Tuesday. The Irish are now 18-8 on the season and are now 7-2 in NCKL play. They can win a league title with a sweep of Clay Center.

The Irish started off their week on Saturday in Silver Lake for a tournament. They opened with a match against Silver Lake and defeated the Eagles in three sets by scores of 22-25, 25-15, and 25-20. The Irish were led by McKenna Kirkpatrick, who had 15 kills and a pair of ace serves, and Peyton Suther, who had 22 assists and three ace serves. The Lady Irish dominated the St. Mary’s Bears in their next pool game, topping the Bears 25-17 and 25-13 in a sweep. Kirkpatrick led the team with eleven kills, and Ashlynn Bledsoe added another eight. Suther had 28 assists and another three aces. In their third pool play game, the Irish fell to the Sabetha Blue Jays in three sets, and then they lost to Royal Valley in two sets. The Lady Irish ended their day with a win over Perry-Lecompton in three sets to place second in the tournament. Kirkpatrick led the Irish with 14 kills, and freshman Sophia Cavanaugh had another nine. Courtney Lewis had three aces and six kills. Suther had another 33 assists in the Lady Irish win. 

Peyton Suther’s big tourney and another 27 kills in each game against Wamego last week earned her the AVCA/MaxPreps Kansas Volleyball Player of the Week. Suther had 141 assists, seven aces, and ten blocks in fourteen sets from September 30 to October 6. Suther joins fellow Lady Irish senior McKenna Kirkpatrick in winning the award. 

The Lady Irish return home for Senior Night this Tuesday for a double dual with Clay Center, who is 10-18 on the season. The Irish can clinch an NCKL title with a sweep of the Tigers. The Lady Irish will then hit the road for a tournament in Hillsboro on Saturday, October. 19th
