WR vs Abilene
The Chapman wrestling team hosted the Abilene Cowboys for their last dual of the season on February 13th. The night started off with an amazing performance by the Lady Emeralds Dance Team, then the seniors were recognized along with their parents. Seniors Zach Ferris and Jacob Doolittle crossed the floor for their final dual in Chapman.
Both teams were short on numbers, so there were no JV matches. However, like a thorn that just won’t go away, Chapman gave up key open weights that put them in an immediate point deficit. Jr Chris Lasluisa (120 lb) tried to outlast his opponent in the first official bout of the night, but came up a bit short. More open weights piled on the points for the cowboys. Fr Joey Alonzo (138 lb) also put up a good fight, but it just wasn’t enough to get the win. Fr Justin Wisner-McLane had a rare opportunity to put up team points by way of an Abilene open weight at 145 lbs. Jr Kyler Welling (152 lb) bounced back after some previous losses and pinned his foe in the second period. Jr Lawrence Smith’s match (160 lb) ended in defeat, making it almost through the second period. So Jeremiah Hughes stepped up with a HUGE win at 170 lbs, pinning his adversary in the second period. Jr Ryan Hengemuhle (182 lb) also scooped up some team points with another cowboy open weight. Sr Jacob Doolittle had a tough match at 195 lbs, and almost pulled out a surprise victory, but it just wasn’t to be on this night. Sr Zach Ferris (220 lb) ended his last home dual with a slew of takedowns and near falls, chalking up a major decision victory for his trophy case. So Colt Sell (285 lb) ended the night by frustrating his rival combatant in the first period, but frustration just wasn’t enough to win him the match.
It was a hard-fought dual for the Irish, but it just wasn’t in the cards for them tonight.
The varsity wrestlers will be back in action next Friday and Saturday as they travel to Concordia for regionals.
The Lady Irish travel to McPherson on Feb 14th for girls’ regionals.
The JV team will host a tournament here in Chapman on Feb 15th.
