The Chapman Irish and Lady Irish competed in their substate tournaments on Friday and Saturday.
The girls wrestled on Friday, traveling all the way to Garnett-Anderson County High School (I had to Google it…). Needless to say, it was a long drive. Freshman Grace Johns (170 lb) finished in 5th place, just outside of qualifying for state. She went 2-2 on the day, earning a decision win and a pin. Senior Grace Mosher (191 lb) had a tough bracket. She wrestled well, but fell just short in both of her matches. She did well for her first (and last) year of wrestling! Junior Chelsey Armbruster (235 lb) gave no ground in this tournament, pinning her way to a 1st place finish. She has been solid all season and showed what being calm, cool, and collected during matches will do for you. The Lady Irish finished 14th as a team (out of 36 total teams).
The lone representative for the boys team on Saturday at McPherson was Sophomore Justin Wisner-McLane (145 lb). He competed in a stacked bracket that saw multiple state qualifiers/placers from last season. His first match pitted him against the number one seed. Justin lost via decision. His second match ended with an injury default (the opponent severely hurt his knee). To Justin’s credit, as soon as he knew that the knee was hurt, he back away so that the referee could stop the match and could get the trainer in to take a look. That was a class act by Wisner-McLane. The third match of the day was another tough match, which Justin lost by another close decision. His last match of the day was for 5th place. Justin earned a 1st period pin, ending his season on a high note.
The last competition of this season will be the girls state tournament in Salina on Friday. Chelsey will be representing the Lady Irish that day and wrestling will begin at noon.
